How to Choose Your First Premium Cigar

Introduction

Walking into a cigar shop for the first time can feel overwhelming. The humidor is full of options, the terminology is unfamiliar, and you don't want to make a $20 mistake. We get it — and we've helped hundreds of first-timers find their footing.

This guide covers everything you need to know to choose your first premium cigar with confidence.

Start With Strength, Not Brand

The most common mistake new smokers make is choosing a cigar based on the box art or a friend's recommendation without considering strength. Cigars range from mild to full-body, and starting too strong can turn a pleasant experience into an unpleasant one.

Mild: Smooth, creamy, low nicotine. Great for beginners. Look for Connecticut wrapper cigars.

Medium: More complexity, moderate nicotine. A natural next step once you're comfortable. Habano wrappers are a great entry point here.

Full: Rich, bold, high nicotine. For experienced smokers only. Sumatra and Maduro wrappers fall here.

Our recommendation for first-timers: Start mild. You can always go stronger — you can't go back.

Size Matters (But Not How You Think)

Cigar size affects the smoking experience more than most beginners realize. Larger ring gauges (thicker cigars) tend to smoke cooler and slower, which is more forgiving for new smokers. Smaller ring gauges can smoke hotter and more intensely.

For your first cigar, a Robusto (5" x 50 ring gauge) is the classic starting point — manageable length, comfortable draw, and enough time to enjoy without committing to a 90-minute smoke.

What to Expect When You Light Up

  • Toasting the foot: Before lighting, gently toast the open end of the cigar with a flame without touching it directly. This prepares the tobacco for an even burn.
  • The draw: A good cigar should draw like sipping through a slightly resistant straw. Not too tight, not too loose.
  • Puffing cadence: One puff every 30–60 seconds keeps the cigar from overheating and turning bitter.
  • Don't inhale: Premium cigars are meant to be tasted, not inhaled. Draw the smoke into your mouth, let it linger, and exhale.

Pairing Your First Cigar

You don't need an elaborate pairing, but having the right drink alongside your cigar enhances the experience. For mild cigars, try:

  • A light roast coffee
  • A cold craft lager
  • Still water (always a safe choice)

Avoid anything too sweet or acidic on your first smoke — it can clash with the tobacco.
